    So I shan't.

    Wish I'd Written This.....
In his 1935 State of the Union Address, FDR spoke to a nation mired in the Depression, but still marinated in conservative values:

"(C)ontinued dependence" upon welfare, said FDR, "induces a spiritual disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole our relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit."

Behind FDR's statement was the conviction that, while the government must step in in an emergency, in normal times, men provide the food, clothing and shelter for their families.

And we did, until the war pulled us out of the Depression and a postwar boom made us, in John K. Galbraith's phrase, The Affluent Society. By the 1960s, America, the richest country on earth, was growing ever more prosperous. But with the 1964 landslide of LBJ, liberalism triumphed and began its great experiment.

Behind the Great Society was a great idea: to lift America's poor out of poverty, government should now take care of all their basic needs. By giving the poor welfare, subsidized food, public housing and free medical care, government will end poverty in America.

At the Superdome and New Orleans Convention Center, we saw the failure of 40 years of the Great Society. No sooner had Katrina passed by and the 17th Street levee broke than hundreds of young men who should have taken charge in helping the aged, the sick and the women with babies to safety took to the streets to shoot, loot and rape. The New Orleans police, their numbers cut by deserters who left their posts to look after their families, engaged in running gun battles all day long to stay alive and protect people.

It was the character and conduct of its people that makes the New Orleans disaster unique. After a hurricane, people's needs are simple: food, water, shelter, medical attention. But they can be hard to meet. People buried in rubble or hiding in attics of flooded homes are tough to get to. But, even with the incompetence of the mayor and governor, and the torpor of federal officials, this was possible.

Coast Guard helicopters were operating Tuesday. There were roads open into the city for SUVs, buses and trucks. While New Orleans was flooded, the water was stagnant. People walked through to the convention center and Superdome. The flimsiest boat could navigate.

Even if government dithered for days -- what else is new -- this does not explain the failure of the people themselves.

Between 1865 and 1940, the South -- having lost a fourth of its best and bravest in battle, devastated by war, mired in poverty -- was famous for the hardy self-reliance of her people, black and white.

In 1940, hundreds of British fishermen and yachtsmen sailed back and forth daily under fire across a turbulent 23-mile Channel to rescue 300,000 soldiers from Dunkirk. How do we explain to the world that a tenth that number of Americans could not be reached in four days from across a stagnant pond?

The real disaster of Katrina was that society broke down. An entire community could not cope. Liberalism, the idea that good intentions and government programs can build a Great Society, was exposed as fraud. After trillions of tax dollars for welfare, food stamps, public housing, job training and education have poured out since 1965, poverty remains pandemic. But today, when the police vanish, the community disappears and men take to the streets to prey on women and the weak.

Stranded for days in a pool of fetid water, almost everyone waited for the government to come save them. They screamed into the cameras for help, and the reporters screamed into the cameras for help, and the "civil rights leaders" screamed into the cameras that Bush was responsible and Bush was a racist.

Americans were once famous for taking the initiative, for having young leaders rise up to take command in a crisis. See any of that at the Superdome? Sri Lankans and Indonesians, far poorer than we, did not behave like this in a tsunami that took 400 times as many lives as Katrina has thus far.

We are the descendants of men and women who braved the North Atlantic in wooden boats to build a country in a strange land. Our ancestors traveled thousands of miles in covered wagons, fighting off Indians far braver than those cowards preying on New Orleans' poor.

Watching that performance in the Crescent City, it seems clear: We are not the people our parents were. And what are all our Lords Temporal now howling for? Though government failed at every level, they want more government.

FDR was right. A "spiritual disintegration" has overtaken us. Government-as-first provider, the big idea of the Great Society, has proven to be "a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit."

Either we get off this narcotic, or it kills us.

    FOR GAIL
    Hi!

Sorry it's taken so long....I'm absolutely SWAMPED!!

I'll update more extensively later (I've got to get ready to go to the church).

    I've been:

Recording, mixing, now mastering the new orchestra album.

Re-mixing last year's Christmas program for release this Christmas (48 tracks, 90 minutes each)

Getting my son's demo's ready to take to L.A. this Thursday

Just a sample....hope you all are well.

I'll try to keep up a little better...

    Love you guys,

    Steve

    Well, Here Goes....
I'll take a minute to update.

First, we have three new cats. One is a seven month-old male. He's black, already 16 pounds and probably the sweetest little guy we've ever had. After we lost Abigale, we were petless for a while. Then, our vet called and asked us to come visit. She had Spooky (our name for him) up for adoption and, as sweet as he was, we couldn't say no. The other two are six month-old females that we adopted through a friend of a friend. So, now there is not a peaceful moment in "Cat World" and I love it.

The church orchestra is recording their first album (no choir) and I'm constantly doing something pertaining to it. New hard drives, computer upgrades and program files created, we're recording drums this weekend.

The church service is broadcast on the internet (www.firstredeemer.org) and is carried all over the TV world via satellite. It's a lot of work and responsibility to maintain good quality audio and last Wednesday, a power surge fried our broadcast audio board. We're using one of my mixers as a "loaner" but it's not enough channels (they need 40) to give a good mix, so we're scrambling to get the old one fixed (OK) or replaced (better).

Personally, things are OK...I could use a raise (couldn't we all), I need to loose 20 pounds and I wish I lived closer to work (56 miles, one way) but all in all, I'll survive.

I hope you all are well.....my love to you all.

    I'M HOME !!!!!! (Please Read)
I just got home from Savannah (GA), where my wife was (drum-roll, please) a delegate to the Republican State Convention!

    WOW!

My liberal friends would poop their drawers to be where I was over the last three days....

I'll not tell all now, it'll take up too much space but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

We had a GREAT time in Savannah. Not only was the convention happening but The Shakespeare Festival (yes, Michael, there were a few Southern accents...you would have died laughing), The Seafood Festival (cheap, fresh, AND you could carry your beer from festivity to festivity) and the Jazz Festival (lots of Zydeco, progressive and jazz/fusion...a really interesting group was from Peru...guitar, a 10 stringed ukulele type instrument and a wizard on wooden and pan flutes ...I thought it was a synthesizer when I first heard him...) were all happening at once, all on River Street (a barely mile long, riverside cobblestone drive circa 1841).

The convention was interesting. Jeb Bush was the featured speaker. I'm pretty much a middle of the road voter, so I wasn't really a follower of the Bush Clan but I gotta tell ya.....Jeb is as articulate and quick witted as Bill Clinton, folksy when he's gotta be and a crowd pleaser the rest of the time. If I were a Democratic leader, I'd be very wary of him.

Nice to be home....I'll do my best to answer any questions with impartiality. I talked to at least 100 people while there and I found out LOTS of stuff.......

I'm pooped...I've driven from Savannah to Chattanooga (my hometown, Mom's) and back to Atlanta. I'm going to have a glass of wine and chill.....

    Later.

    For Gail....
As she so sweetly pointed out, Gail reminded me that I've not updated in a while (I know you're all waiting with baited breath), so here goes.

First on my mind is, I probably will have our cat, Abigale, put down today. She's now 13 and in liver failure. She cries when we pick her up, she throws up anything she eats and has dwindled from 15 lbs. to 4. Our vet sees her every Monday and concurs that it's time.
She's been a good, faithful pet. She's never bitten or scratched anyone and has been a very good companion. I'm not looking forward to this.

Work is good. The kid's musical is a hugh extravaganza (some 200 kids in the choir and appearing as actors in the musical) and will be performed twice for the services this Sunday morning. The studio is doing well, with a couple of corporate clients and an orchestral/vocal CD being produced. I also provided sound for an all-day jazz festival last week-end (9:00am - 11:00pm)....lots of wind and sun but still enjoyable.

Well, that's it....pretty boring. I've got an adventure coming up in a couple of weeks (no hints) and I'll fill you in on the gory details then.

    Love to you all,

    Steve

Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness....
    Hmmmmm....

I guess they've taken off "Life".

Maybe they should change the phrase to "Quality of Life......" They took away the right to life for the unborn, now it seems that the public is ready to take away the right to life for anyone too sick to enjoy it.

I guess it's the natural progression of things....

Since we've killed a few million babies, there's a smaller (and getting smaller) work force to support social security, so I guess we start killing off the recipients too incapacitated to speak for themselves.

Sure, I know she's got no chance of recovery....and her legal guardian (the husband who drove her to be this way in the first place) says that, "Yeah, sure...that's what she told me....she wants to die. That's the ticket!" I guess he wants to rid himself of her so he can marry the mother of his bastard children....

I want you all to think a minute....

Have we de-valued life so much that we think nothing of killing viable babies as they're being born, or killing weak and defenseless adults? Look at what just happened yesterday at yet another school....

What are we teaching our young people about the value and sanctity of life?

    Hell.....
This was sent to me by a friend, who swears it's a true story. Even if it's not, it's still funny.

The following is supposedly an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound"
that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at
which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.

As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different Religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that
if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more
than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell.

With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change
of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has
to expand proportionately as souls are added.

    This gives two possibilities:

    1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

    2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

    So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you", and take into
account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct...leaving only Heaven thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God."

    Bombs Away....A True Story
In my previous church job, I was a "jack-of-all-trades".....soundman one week, bassist the next. This was at a very large Methodist Church....a 1500 seat sanctuary with 3 services per Sunday.

I had to be at rehearsal (playing bass) at 7:00am, so this particular morning, I sleepily took my seat up in the back of the Chancellery, on an elevated stage section. As we played through the first couple of tunes, I noticed a large shoebox tied up with string lying beside my chair. Since this was just after 9/11, we were all rather attuned to anything out of the ordinary.

I sort of timidly asked, "Has anyone noticed this box back here?", to which one of the pastors replied, "Yes, it was on the lectern when I came in this morning". Hmmm......

I noticed that there was a note attached to the box, so after another tune, I pulled it from the string holding it to the box and read, "PLEASE GOD, FORGIVE ME FOR DESTROYING THOSE AROUND ME!!!!".

    Hmmmmm.....

I raised my hand again, asking if anyone had read the note....the pastor said that he had and figured it was a dirty book or perhaps a kids drug stash. I didn't feel that conjecture was the safest course of action to take- especially since it was literally under my chair. I asked if anyone had any objection to my taking the box outside, behind the church. Everyone basically said, "Knock yourself out", so I moved it.

We got through the first service without incident and afterward, the choir director came to me asking about the box's location. I told her it was out back on a remote stair landing.....and she reminded me that it now sat just outside the nursery....

    Rats!

So, I got her permission to place a discreet call to the police, requesting that they come and dispose of the contraband for us. I called 911, asking that the officer come to the back of the church, hoping to attract as little attention as possible. He arrived after the music of the second service, so I slipped out a back entrance, met him, showed him the note and, after he assured me that he'd handle it, I went back in, preparing for out 3rd (and largest) service.

We hadn't finished the first anthem before, through the front door, in walked a fire chief, 10 firemen, 20 policemen and 2 bomb-sniffing dogs!

They stopped the music, evacuated the buildings (wouldn't even allow me to get my bass case!), evacuated a nearby housing complex and a small shopping center. The words "over-kill" and, "You're fired" kept coming to my mind.

After safely stowing my bass in my car, I went to the chief, introduced myself as the genesis of this whole conundrum and asked when it would be resolved. He said that they were bringing in the bomb disposal unit and that I could call the detective in charge on Monday to see how it all turned out.

    Well......

I called the next day, asking for the detective. I told him who I was and requested any information that he could give. He told me that, indeed, the bomb squad brought in their "Bomb Trailer", a specially built unit with reinforced steel sides, open at the top to allow explosions to be safely vented skyward. The suspect devises are exposed to a small but powerful charge, causing any explosive materials to detonate or be scattered, minimizing their impact.

When our shoebox was blown up, it went straight up- 100 feet in the air, pieces of the box ripped asunder, releasing it's dangerous contents....the things that was "DESTROYING THOSE" around our troubled parishioner....raining down on the heads of the bomb squad, along with shards of cardboard were...

    hundreds of women's panties.

    All colors...all sizes.

The pastor did not fire me.

But I did offer a "brief" apology to the pastoral staff.

    Busy, Busy
    Well, it's been a while.....

I've been very busy at work (church job) designing a new lighting system, then getting prices/estimates. Our youth ministry has already out-grown it's new facility and now meets in the gym, where I have to set up our large P.A. system (including lighting and video) every Wednesday. They have a Christian Rock group that plays for their services, so there's full reinforcement required. We're starting our orchestra album soon, so I'm preparing for that, as well as working with our kids music minister on their full length play/extravaganza coming up next month.

In the studio, I've been working on the soundtrack for a local county promotional video and that project "debuts" tonight at Chateau Elan (a fancy local hotel/vineyard combo), so I gotta don my tux and eat rubber chicken. I can't complain....they pay good.

I'm going to post one more entry today....one of my "strange but true" stories. Hope you enjoy it!

    Noises in the Attic
I was standing in the hallway talking to my wife, who was in a bedroom, when I heard the sound of scurrying little feet above my head. It appears that a family of squirrels has taken up residence in our attic. We've heard them on a consistent basis for over a week now, so it seems that they've made themselves at home.

I hope they're good Republican/Baptist squirrels that go to The Church in the Wildwood....and have Bushy tails.

It'll be my luck that they're grey and hooked on nuts.....making mine a "crack" house as they open their bounty.

    It's Been a While......
I've been reading you all every day (sometimes commenting) but I've been so swamped with work and family stuff during the holidays that I've not felt very inspired to write. Here's a brief synopsis:

Work- I start the year with a substantial raise (a 1/3 increase in salary) but lots more responsibility. I'm still not "Full-time" yet but that's OK, because it frees me up to continue working in my studio.

Studio- Going good. I'm mixing a school concert that I recorded during the holidays....should be done this week. I recorded our church program (48 tracks), mixed it in a week and, if I say so myself, it sounds pretty darned good for such a quick mix. I start a sound-for-video project this week (voice-overs, backing music) for a local chamber of commerce promo. Boring but decent money.

Personal life- Doing good. Started back on my diet (gotta loose 30 lbs.) this week and I'll start mild exercise in a day or so....The family is well enough, although my 30 year-old son acted 3 at Christmas. Don't ask....

I hope you all have a great New Year and all of your dreams come true. Give to a charity (even if it's just $1.00) that will go to the tsunami victims. Pray for the surviviors...we've not heard the last of the horror.

    Love You Guys.

    Hell Week
This is the week of preparation or the Christmas Extravaganza. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with celebrating the birth of whom I believe to be The Savior of the World, but creating the fleshly pagentry can be a bit of a pain.

Smoke machines....for dramatic effect. Good enough if they, #1. work, #2. have a qualified operator, #3. have enough dry ice to get through two preformances.

Snow machines.....again for dramatic effect. Basically, bubbles being blown from the ceiling. They just can't fall on the orchestra. Soapy violins aren't necessarily squeaky clean.

Wireless mics.....it's like saying, " Please screw up and make me look foolish".

Oh....I miss Pacobelle. To paraphrase Karen Carpenter, "We'd Only Just Begun......"

    Before The Drugs Kick In......
Yesterday, I went to my mother-in-law's house to help her prepare for Thanksgiving. I'm thinking.....trim a shrub, blow some leaves off of the sidewalk.

    No.

When the girl at the grocery check-out counter said, "Have a nice Thanksgiving...", I should have said, "No thanks, I have other plans..."

I and my brother-in-law cut down seven large, dead trees that have been threatening her house (they send little warnings when the wind blows.....a twig here.....a large, rotted limb there).

    Yes.

    Seven.......

We had to cut them up in manageable sections just to drag them off with her 18 hp. lawn tractor. It took all day. He, riding the mower, me (the idiot that knows how to operate a chain saw), cutting them up.

I'm so sore that any movement.....ANY movement is painful.

    So.....

I took one of the hoarded pain pills that my dentist prescribed for me when I had a root canal done a couple of months ago. I washed it down with a glass of white zinfandel and now I'm waiting for the drugs to kick in.

I think God will forgive me this one.......

    The Election...Thank God It's Over
One half of the country mourns....

The other half hopes the idiot that they put there doesn't screw it up any worse than he already has.

That's all I'm gonna say. We're all in the same boat and I see a sunami on the horizon.

For now, that's it for politics but stay tuned. I foresee lots of stuff down the road that will affect us all....big time....no matter who is President.

    Back to my life.

Lots of exercise...I've gotten badly out of shape.
I'm eating one meal per day. Mostly fish and veggies. Unbuttered, unsalted popcorn for snacks.
My moods have been on the depressed side here lately....don't know why. I think I need some excitement in my life.

Work is good....lots to do, with Christmas, the new building and studio stuff. I need to find some time to spend with a friend that's written some nice poetry/songs. Hopefully she can spend some time with me soon.

That's pretty much it....just keepin' on keepin' on.

As Karen Carpenter Once Sang, "Where Do I Begin.......?"
To Slickgothgurl, I believe that God paved the way for every President we've ever had....even Bill Clinton. Read the writings of our forefathers, the ones that established this country, they mention God regularly. The House and Senate open with prayer, as (I believe) does the Supreme Court. If Kerry is elected, he'll place his hand on a Bible to swear the oath.....I believe it is all part of a Divine plan.

I'm not sure what (Bush) lies you're referring to but if it's the intelligence supplied by the CIA and Great Britain, I'll address that. Clinton denuded our intelligence agencies. They outlawed double agents and any real "spy" infrastructure that we had to appease the U.N., so yes, some of the data was probably false but Bush did not know that (and neither did Kerry, who initially supported the war, then didn't)....but Saddam brought it on himself. Had he allowed the weapons inspectors in to complete their jobs (and had he not tried to assassinate Bush, Sr.), the U.N. wouldn't have issued sanctions against him and he just might still be in power.

Bush served in the Air National Guard and was honorably discharged, as did about 20 or so of my friends. I was number 277 in the draft. Neither of us cheated. Kerry, on the other hand, served, then betrayed the men he served with, calling them "baby killers"....What do you think war is? Bush didn't fly the planes into the World Trade Center....terrorists did....and Bush is rightfully taking the war to them. It's funny...Democrats deify JFK and he's the one that got us into Viet Nam to begin with.

Women's rights....My wife has made more money during the Bush Presidency than she's ever made (being an office manager for physicians). When we married in 1972, my wife had never ovulated. Never. I was an uber-liberal rock & roller who believed in "Zero Population Growth", legalized drugs, "Turn on, Tune in and Drop out"....My band played for liberal candidates and at one time, toured with the McGovern crew. Then, we were visited by some of the party hierarchy. In a casual conversation with a fellow from the DNC, I asked him who he'd like to share a joint with, dead or alive. He said, "Karl Marx". I asked why and he said (pretty much verbatim) that "Marx embodied to liberal, socialist society that everyone in the Democratic party was working toward" and that he'd love to get his strategy how to "conquer America".....I was dumbfounded. So, needless to say, I swapped sides. My wife became miraculously pregnant (we'd had a friend abort and she became a mental wreck from the guilt) and we decided that we could share our lives with a kid, so we had Eric.... 29, smart, rational and also a conservative (much to my surprise). My wife has thrived under Nixon, Reagan and the Bush's administrations.
I think the only abortion method that may be outlawed is partial birth abortion. That's where the baby is carried to full term, turned breach (which is the REAL danger in child birth), then the body is delivered with the head left in the canal and the child is killed by forceps through the base of the skull. If the child is taken from the birth canal, why not fully deliver it? How can that procedure "save" the mother? My mom worked for the united way during the 50's and 60's....she quit as soon as they started supporting abortion. She said it was murder.

As far as the war on terror goes, I'm sure you'll change your tune when funding for homeland security is cut back and a few of your city busses go up in smoke. Ask the Spanish...or the Israelis...or the Russians. As far as drug research goes, we'd all like to see those diseases eradicated but what did Clinton do about it? He had eight years.

I believe in equal pay for women....Bush has women working for him, ask them if he pays well. I hear you complain about Bush and MEN but did you know that there is a HUGE ground-swell of anti-abortion support among women?

    To Simmeringbrain:

Clinton signed NAFTA into being. It's HIS baby. Jobs are overseas because of him....not Bush.
Clinton was an out and out coward. The Cole was attacked and he did NOTHING....and his people KNEW it was Bin Laden, knew where he was and Clinton did nothing.

We were attacked on 9/11....did you guys get the news down there? (Sorry, couldn't pass that one up). The economy would've tanked no matter who was President. Kerry may get his chance, so we'll see what he does. By the way, Heinz has factories all over the world....if Kerry is such a defender of the poor and down-trodden, why doesn't he tell his wife to close those centers and move them back to America? between you and I, I think Tereza (sic) will be absolutely frightening as a first lady.....

I've been a bit flippant....mainly because I've had to deflect what seems to be a rampant hate....not just of Bush but of me because I choose to base my life (and my vote) on what I feel is right. That's sad, when liberals are supposed to be so tolerant. As bad a President as I thought Clinton was, I never expressed hatred for him...my spiritual side can't allow me to hate. Anyway, I knew that after Clinton was caught playing "hide the cigar", he'd do more to destroy his party than Republicans ever could.....and I was right. I'll vote for Bush (just as my wife, my son and every neighbor around me for miles, judging from the yard signs) and hope for the best. No matter who "wins", I'm sure that the results won't be known for months, allowing for all of the lawsuits and recounts. I just hope that soon we can get back to our day-to-day entries....laughing at our escapades and nurturing through our mishaps.
